In the second round of the WTA 1000 Madrid Open women’s singles, No. 28 seed from China, Wang Xinyu, faced 18-year-old Czech wildcard Laura Samson, currently ranked 171st in the world. Despite capturing the first set, Wang ultimately fell 6-2, 3-6, 0-6, exiting the tournament in the round of 64.

Wang Xinyu, ranked 31st globally and the top-ranked Chinese women’s singles player, received a first-round bye and began her Madrid clay campaign directly in the second round. She started strong against Samson, establishing a commanding presence at the baseline with powerful groundstrokes, reliable serves, and smooth net play. Wang broke Samson’s serve in the fourth and eighth games of the opening set to secure a comfortable 6-2 win.
However, from the second set onwards, the effects of a leg injury began to hamper Wang’s performance—an issue that also caused her to retire from the previous tournament. As her shot stability declined, Samson capitalized, forcing Wang into extended rallies and testing her movement around the court. Wang struggled to hold serve, conceding the second set 3-6.
In the deciding set, Wang’s physical struggles intensified, and she went on to lose 0-6. With the 1-2 defeat, Wang Xinyu’s Madrid Open journey ended in the second round.
