Zhang Shuai ousted by world No.1 Sabalenka

In the third round of the WTA1000 Toronto event held this morning Beijing time, Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai faced world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Despite putting up a spirited fight, she succumbed to the gulf in class, losing 3-6, 4-6. This marked her fifth consecutive career defeat to Sabalenka, ending her run before the round of 16.

The 37-year-old Zhang had impressed in the previous two rounds. She breezed past Yulia Putintseva 2-0 in the opener, snapping a seven-year losing streak against the Kazakh and securing her first hard-court main-draw win of the 2026 season. In the second round, she won 10 straight games against former French Open champion Jeļena Ostapenko before the latter retired, setting up a clash with the formidable Sabalenka.

The pair had met five times previously, with Zhang winning only their first encounter in 2016 and losing the subsequent four. This was their first meeting in four years. In the opening set, Zhang earned a break point early but failed to convert. The turning point came in the sixth game, where Sabalenka's aggressive play earned a decisive break, and she cruised to take the set 6-3.

In the second set, both players held serve through the first six games to make it 3-3. In the seventh, Zhang raced to a 30-0 lead but then dropped consecutive points, allowing Sabalenka to secure a critical break and fall behind 3-4. The veteran fought back tenaciously, but Sabalenka's superior firepower prevailed. The world No.1 held serve in the 10th game to close out the set 6-4, sealing a straight-sets victory.

Despite the 1-hour-16-minute defeat, Zhang showcased her trademark resilience. Sabalenka, meanwhile, extended her hard-court winning streak to 14 matches and will next face 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova for a quarterfinal berth.
