On the evening of October 13, Chinese veteran Zhang Shuai fell to American Ashlyn Krueger 3-6, 0-6 in the first round of the Wuhan Open women's singles.

The two had split their previous two meetings. Zhang broke early in the first set but then lost three straight games to trail 1-3. In the fifth game, she converted her fifth break point and held serve to level at 3-3. Krueger, however, won the next three games to take the set 6-3.
In the second set, Zhang was completely out of sorts. She saved two break points in the opening game but was still broken, then dropped serve again in the third game. Although she forced two consecutive break points in the fourth game and another later on, she failed to convert any of them, and Krueger held. From there, Zhang faded completely, losing the second set 0-6 and the match 0-2. Krueger, who entered as a lucky loser, sealed her first main-draw win at the tournament by winning nine straight games.
